The world of Pokémon is not an independent one. Trainers will always encounter other trainers and engaging in Pokémon battles. in Pokémon GO, this began with Gym battles and eventually upgraded to direct trainer battles. And next year, this will expand into an official league! Introducing GO Battle League!

Announced in a Pokémon GO Live Blog, GO Battle League will build upon Trainer Battles, the current player vs player battling system present in the game. Players will be able to earn entry into official leagues through walking. Once entered they can participate in online battles against other participants, rising and falling in the leaderboard. They’ll compete against players from around the world.

GO Battle League is currently set to release in early 2020.

This is all we know about the upcoming service so far. We assume that leagues will be seasonal, granting rewards based on one’s position on the leaderboards. More information will be made available as we approach the feature’s release date.
