Niantic is back to make the world a healthier place. The developers behind Pokémon GO has announced their next major Earth Day campaign. The event, just like last year, will promote gameplay aspects as rewards for picking up litter and garbage.
Last year, the Earth Day event resulted in 6.5 tons of garbage being picked up and properly processed. Due to this success, Niantic is partnering with “Playmob, gaming-for-good engagement platform, and 15 NGOs to host cleanups in communities near you.”
Players can participate in one of two ways. From April 12 to 28, Visit the Niantic Playmob page, which lists all of the organized cleaning events that are taking place. Search for one in your local area. OR, tag @NianticLabs using #AugmentingReality and tell them about your cleanup. They will count your efforts towards the participation totals.
The more trash everyone collects, the better the rewards in-game will be.
- If 2,000 players attend to clean up, Ground-type Pokémon will appear more frequently in the wild.
- If 5,000 players attend and clean up, Ground-type Pokémon will appear more frequently in the wild and you’ll have the chance to catch Shiny Diglett.
- If 7,000 players attend and clean up, Ground-type Pokémon will appear more frequently in the wild, you’ll have the chance to catch Shiny Diglett, and you’ll receive 2× Catch Stardust and 2× Catch Candy for Pokémon appearing as part of this event.
It warms my heart to see people doing good for the planet like this.
