Nintendo has a history of making odd and interesting accessories for their games. A perfect example of this is the Poké Ball Plus device that released with Pokémon Let’s Go games.
Well, according to a recent patent discovery, we might see new examples of that.
First discovered by JapaneseNintendo.com, the major gaming company has applied for not one, but five new patents for a game controller with a similar design to the Poké Ball Plus.
“The patents aim to properly arrange components in a spherical controller, to enable various operations using a game controller, to properly arrange components in a spherical controller, to improve the degree of freedom for a structure for light emission in a game controller, and to provide a game controller in which components are properly arranged in a substantially spherical game controller.”
This invites a number of questions. One could assume this was just refreshing on their intellectual property, but the patent lifetime in Japan and the US is 20 years. The Poké Ball Plus has only existed for a single year.
And why five patents? There doesn’t seem to be much of a difference between them if any. It’s possible that they will release 5 different designs instead of just a single Poké Ball option. (Poké Ball, Super Ball, Ultra Ball, Master Ball, Premier Ball, maybe.)
The truth is that we don’t know right now. All we can do now is wait and see.
